Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
